As more and more citizens across the United States and the world wonder what those white-lined patterns are in the sky, some investigators have advanced a theory as to the reason for 'chemtrails.'
Normal exhaust trails from high-flying jets have long been known as contrails, a compound word meaning 'condensation trail which is further defined as streaks of condensed water vapor created in the air by an airplane or rocket at high altitudes.' Contrails can and usually are distorted by the winds, and sometimes it spreads outwards to form a layer of cirrus cloud, or otherwise just dissipate.
However, what many are seeing in the skies that may appear at first glance to be contrails are not at all, according to William Thomas, outspoken journalist, author, and videographer. Thomas has coined the term 'chemtrails to describe the sites being reported from all corners of the globe.'
Usually, when you see a contrail, it is one lone stream, rarely more than one. However, what Thomas has dubbed chemtrails are usually multiple trails laid down in a crisscrossing pattern, often described by viewers as similar to a checker board or even a spider's web. The trails have been seen across North America as well as in at least 14 other countries, according to Thomas.
While many theories abound as to what the chemtrails are composed of, and what effect they have on the human population (see feature story in Feb. XX, 2000, Clifton Record), the world's governments continue to deny they are purposely spraying anything from these aircraft.
Thomas believes the government is covering up the truth, and has spent untold hours seeking data. He recently produced an 18-minute videotape through his Lifeboat News Productions ' 'Chemtrails: Mystery Lines in the Skies ' that puts forth a theory that the federal government is attempting to manipulate weather patterns to reverse global warming trends.
The aircraft most often involved in producing the chemtrails are Boeing KC-135s and Boeing KC-10s. Both big jets are used by the U.S. Air Force for air-to-air refueling. The aircraft involved are almost always painted either solid white, silver, or black, with few or no identifying markings visible.
'In March 2000, the United States Air Force grounded the majority of its KC-135s to fix reported problems, Thomas reports ion the videotape. He said that chemtrail sightings immediately dropped from an average of 24 sites to just two. As the planes were put back into service, the sightings climbed back to previous levels, he said.
Thomas also cites a research paper titled 'Weather As A Force Multiplier: Overriding the Weather in 2025, as proof that the government is indeed participating in chemtrail research. The paper clearly refers to chemtrails as 'aerial obscuration, according to the videotape.
The research paper suggests the government could spray a 'protective sunscreen overhead to deflect one percent of the suns rays, which could in effect slow or even neutralize runaway global warming. The research paper noted that the preferred substance to be sprayed would be a form of aluminum particulates.
In the summer of 1999, Thomas reports that the city of Espanola, Ontario, Canada, was the site for numerous chemtrail spreads. While governmental agencies would not release data concerning the sprayings, an independent laboratory said water samples should aluminum particulate levels seven times the safe level.
Healthcare officials across the country, while extremely concerned with the rise in 'flu-like symptoms not directly attributed to influenza, are not yet willing to say the chemtrails are causing these problems. The government continues to deny that any deliberate release of chemicals into the skies is being conducted, but American people increasingly are looking for answers.
'Americans are not alone in their anxious bewilderment and suffering. In England, after lingering contrails and cobweb-like fallout were reported over London and Birmingham, the BBC reported on Jan. 14, 1999, that more than 8,000 people ' mostly elderly '- died from pneumonia and other respiratory complications in the last week of December 1998 and the first two weeks of January 1999, Thomas reports.
While most of the mysterious sprayings eventually merge into what appears to be overcast skies, occasionally the sprayings seem to go awry, and substances ranging from a thick, sticky goo to a cobweb-like filament fall to the earth, adhering to anything they touch. Thomas advises caution in handling these substances.
An independent laboratory tested some of these materials, and found them to contain, among other things, ethylene dibromide (ED
. An extremely hazardous pesticide, EDB was banned by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1983. But in 1991, the composition of jet fuel used by commercial and military jet aircraft in the U.S., now using EDB as a key component of that fuel.
The 1991 Chemical Hazards of the Workplace warns that repeated exposure to low levels of ethylene dibromide results in general weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pains, coughing and shortness of breath, upper respiratory tract irritation, and respiratory failure caused by swelling of the lymph glands in the lungs. Deterioration of the heart, liver, and kidneys, and hemorrhages in the respiratory tract can also result from prolonged contact with the aircraft fuel containing EDB. All of these symptoms appear to be common ailments suffered by multitudes of residents in areas being sprayed.
Whatever these mystery chemtrails contain, it is sure that the controversy over them is still in its infancy stage. However, once relegated to controversy-based radio talk shows and the Internet, the mainstream media is now taking notice. As Thomas is joined by dozens of investigators looking into the ongoing phenomena, more is surely to be uncovered.
